This building, constructed about 1890, is currently vacant. It is located adjacent to the Eastern Michigan University campus,
directly across from the president's house. Its location and its unique Byzantine tower are its two outstanding features.
Because of the angle of the property, the building stands as a focal point with its tower facing Forest Street, making it the climax of the streetscape.
For its first 17 years, it was the home of Charles J. Becker, a salesman and later vice-president of Scharf Tag Co.
His son, George P. Becker wrote the Fight Song for Eastern Michigan University (then the Michigan State Normal School).
When the Beckers left, the house was occupied by a variety of people until 1948 when the Francis-Stachlewicz families lived there until 1968.
The tower is the most unusual aspect of the building and is still in its original form. It is said no other building with this type of tower remains in the
Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area. In 1977, the house was placed on the state register of historic sites.
John Talbot of Talbot Associates is the present owner. He is remodeling the structure and converting it into apartments.
